Courses
Admission
All of our courses require different levels of qualifications for entry and the details provided below are for general guidance only.
English language
All applicants are required to gain a recognised English language qualification before entering any of our courses. For pre-sessional English programmes and courses below degree level, this must be one from a list of UK government recognised tests, most commonly IELTS. For degree level programmes (bachelors, masters and PhD), we consider a wide range of international qualifications.
International Foundation Programme
The following qualifications will be considered for entry on to our International Foundation Programme in Art, Design and Media or Business, Law and Social Sciences, and Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.
- IELTS certificate from an approved centre
- Good high school graduation grades which include maths
Undergraduate programmes
The following qualifications will be considered for entry on to undergraduate programmes
- two GCE/VCE A level passes
- High School Leaving Certificate, which is recognised as equivalent to A level standard
- other international qualifications gained after 13 years of secondary/further education
Sheffield Hallam welcomes applications from international school students taking the International Baccalaureate Diploma and those achieving 28 points or more will usually be successful in obtaining an offer of a place on our undergraduate programmes. For information about IB points equivalences against the UCAS tariff please visit the UCAS website.
Pre-masters programme (Graduate Certificate)
The following qualifications will be considered for entry on to our Graduate Certificate International Pre-Masters in Business and English
- diplomas awarded after a minimum of two years study after completion of a secondary education
- students holding a degree in a subject considered unsuitable for direct entry to a masters programme - 'conversion' students
Postgraduate taught programmes (masters)
The following qualifications will be considered for entry on to postgraduate taught programmes
- a first degree or professional qualification recognised as being equivalent to degree standard
- an HND or higher education diploma with substantial work experience in an appropriate field
- successful completion of a recognised pre-Masters course

The following qualifications will be considered for entry on to postgraduate research programmes (MPhil/PhD)

Accommodation
The halls include a variety of room types from standard non en-suite rooms to large, fully self-contained flats. All our halls are furnished with standard bedroom furniture unless otherwise stated. This includes a bed, wardrobe, a desk or workstation and a chair. Some bedrooms have a wash basin or en-suite. You will need to supply your own bed linen (duvet, duvet cover, sheet, pillow and pillowcase), towels, crockery and cooking utensils unless otherwise stated.
You will also have access to a cooker, microwave, fridge, freezer, vacuum cleaner and laundry facilities. The costs below are for the 2017/18 academic year and show the price range of each of our halls and reflect the different types of rooms*. All the bills are included in your rent. All allocated residences enforce a strict non-smoking policy, in line with the University's non-smoking policy. The hall column indicates how many beds are available at each property and is subject to change.

Private sector accommodation
When to start looking
Signing up early? - Think again! If you don't want to live in halls, there is a surplus of good quality student accommodation in Sheffield. Don't believe the myth that there is a shortage of student housing in Sheffield - it's not true! Students who don't start house hunting until the summer before they return to University still secure good properties. Landlords usually start advertising student properties from December, ready for the following September. Make sure you visit a variety of properties to get a feel for the different types available. We recommend you wait until after the Christmas break before signing a tenancy agreement for your next academic year.

Snug - Guaranteeing you somewhere safe to live
In partnership with Sheffield City Council, we have compiled an accredited directory of private student accommodation in Sheffield. The scheme is called Snug.
Snug is a scheme of registering, inspecting and advertising student properties in Sheffield and is intended to make sure all our students have access to good-quality, safe accommodation in the private sector. That means you can be confident they've been inspected by Sheffield City Council and comply with strict rules.
